WATCHES AND WARNINGS
--------------------
CHANGES WITH THIS ADVISORY:

None.

SUMMARY OF WATCHES AND WARNINGS IN EFFECT:

A Hurricane Watch is in effect for...
* The Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument from Nihoa to
French Frigate Shoals.

A Hurricane Watch means that hurricane conditions are possible
within the watch area. A watch is typically issued 48 hours
before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force
winds, conditions that make outside preparations difficult or
dangerous.

A Hurricane Warning may be required for portions of the
Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument on Monday.

For storm information specific to your area, including possible
inland watches and warnings, please monitor products issued by your
local National Weather Service forecast office.

DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK
----------------------
At 1100 PM HST (0900 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Nolo was located
near latitude 16.5 North, longitude 161.3 West. Nolo is moving
toward the west-northwest near 12 mph (19 km/h). A turn toward the
northwest is forecast on Monday, with a turn toward the north
expected on Tuesday. On the forecast track, the center of Nolo will
remain well south and southwest of the main Hawaiian Islands but
will approach the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument on
Tuesday.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 155 mph (250 km/h)
with higher gusts. Nolo is a category 4 hurricane on the
Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some additional strengthening
is expected, and Nolo could become a category 5 hurricane on
Monday. A gradual weakening trend is likely to begin by late
Monday.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150 miles
(240 km).

The estimated minimum central pressure is 929 mb (27.44 inches).

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND
----------------------
WIND: Hurricane conditions are possible in the Hurricane Watch area
in the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument by Wednesday, with
tropical storm conditions possible by Tuesday.

SURF: Swells generated by Nolo will be affecting south-facing
shores of the main Hawaiian Islands for the next few days. These
swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current
conditions. Large surf associated with Nolo will affect the
Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument beginning on Monday.
These large waves will likely inundate some of the low-lying atolls,
especially from French Frigate Shoals to Nihoa. Please consult
products from your local weather office.

Hurricane Nolo Discussion Number 31
NWS Central Pacific Hurricane Center Honolulu HI EP152026
Issued by NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL
1100 PM HST Sun Sep 27 2026

Satellite imagery indicates that Nolo has continued to intensify,
with a symmetrical Central Dense Overcast of very cold cloud tops
surrounding the 30 n mi diameter eye. The eye temperatures have
warmed to as much as 21 deg C. The advisory intensity is set at
135 kt based on a blend of subjective Dvorak estimates from JTWC
and PHFO Honolulu and objective estimates from UW-CIMSS. The
upper-level outflow is well-defined over all quadrants of the
hurricane. Geostationary and microwave imagery show that Nolo
continues to lack outer convective banding features, and is
therefore maintaining the characteristics of an annular hurricane.

Nolo continues to move west-northwestward at around 290/10 kt while
being steered by the flow on the south side of a mid-tropospheric
ridge. A mid- to upper-level cyclone located about 10 degrees to
the northwest of the hurricane is expected to induce a turn toward
the northwest and north within the next 36 hours. Then, Nolo should
decelerate and turn westward while moving around the circulation of
the cyclone and merging with it. A mid-level ridge building to the
northwest of Nolo should eventually cause it to turn westward late
in the forecast period. The official track forecast is very similar
to the one from the previous advisory, and remains in good agreement
with the HCCA and Google DeepMind guidance.

The hurricane has been situated in an environment that is quite
conducive for strengthening, with low vertical wind shear and
sufficiently warm sea surface temperatures. This regime should
persist for at least the next 12 hours or so. However, the global
models indicate that vertical shear over Nolo should increase
substantially by Tuesday. Therefore, the hurricane should begin
weakening within 24 hours or so. Nonetheless, Nolo's annular
structure could result in a slower rate of weakening than seen in
typical hurricanes. In 4-5 days, the models suggest a more
favorable upper-level flow pattern, which could result in some
re-strengthening. The official intensity forecast remains at the
high end of the model guidance.
